

Over the past five years, the game has grown and evolved, and so has this guide. It’s broken down into sections that you can jump to using the contents list above.

The guide is aimed at Commanders just starting out in Elite: Dangerous as well as those looking for a relatively simple resource for the game’s core mechanics. In light of this, I created this beginner’s guide back in January 2015 and have continued working on it since. I personally find it very rewarding to figure out game mechanics for myself through a process of discovery and experimentation, but others may find this a bit frustrating! As such, it can be quite daunting to the newcomer, particularly those unfamiliar with the previous Elite games or space sims in general. Let’s be honest, Elite: Dangerous (ED) doesn’t exactly go out of its way to explain things to players (though it is now starting to get much better in this respect!).
